METHODOLOGY PRO-SEMINAR
This introductory seminar is intended to prepare students for further studies. Each participant will learn and apply the basics of how to research and present the history and theology of a collect type prayer of their choice.
HISTORY OF THE LITURGY
Participants will learn how the liturgy of the Roman Rite has developed throughout its history, shaped both by political and cultural influences and by internal dynamics. Participants will have the opportunity to examine the characteristics of the liturgy in their home country.
WESTERN LITURGICAL BOOKS
Participants will learn how the evolution of the liturgical books of the West contributes to the understanding of the rites and prayers in their developing contexts. Books include the Sacramentaries and Ordines, Pontificals, Missals and Rituals, Breviaries, Antiphonaries and Lectionaries.
LITURGICAL THEOLOGY
Participants will examine representative theologies of the New Testament and patristic period and of others leading up to the present. They will be able to show how different theologies influence the development and expression of the liturgy.
HERMENEUTICS I
Students will learn methods for discerning the meaning of a prayer in its historical and liturgical context and will use interpretative keys for understanding its fuller meaning. This method is applied to the study of one collect in a paper of 4,000-5,000 words.
